Bozeman High edges Missoula Sentinel to top Class AA all-sports rankings

Bozeman High had the best fall sports season of any Class AA school.

The Hawks have a narrow lead of Missoula Sentinel in the all-sports rankings, which were calculated by applying point totals to team finishes in the fall sports of boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, boys and girls soccer, volleyball and football. Ten points were awarded for a state title, seven points for a second-place finish, six for a third-place finish and so on, down to one point for an eighth-place finish.

Bozeman finished the 2020 fall season with 46.5 points, buoyed by state titles in girls cross country and girls golf. The Hawks added a second-place finish in boys soccer and third-place finish in boys cross country. They also scored points in girls soccer and football, tying for third and fourth in both, and volleyball, where they tied for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.

Sentinel had one of the best fall sports seasons in school history, winning three state championships: boys cross country, boys golf and football. The Spartans, who totaled 43.5 points, also received points in boys soccer (tied for third/fourth), girls cross country (sixth), girls soccer (tied for fifth/sixth/seventh/eighth) and volleyball (tied for fifth/sixth/seventh/eighth).

Billings West finished the fall season in third place in the all-sports rankings with 36.5 points on the strength of second-place finishes in football and girls golf. The Golden Bears also tied for third and fourth in volleyball and placed fourth in boys cross country, fifth in girls cross country and sixth in boys golf. They also tied for fifth/sixth/seventh/eighth in boys and girls soccer.

Missoula Hellgate, which got a boys soccer title, is fourth in the all-sports rankings with 30.5 points. Kalispell Glacier, the girls soccer champion, is fifth with 29.5 points. Helena High (23.5 points) is sixth, while Helena Capital, the state volleyball champion, is seventh with 22.5 points.
