Friday Night Live: A timeline from Week 2 of the high school football season

Welcome to Week 2 of "Friday Night Live" — MTN Sports' continuous real-time tracker of various scores and updates from high school football — as we keep tabs on what's happening across Montana.

There are several key matchups tonight, including No. 3 Bozeman's home contest against No. T5 Kalispell Glacier in Class AA; No. 4 Columbia Falls hosting No. 1 Frenchtown and No. 3 Hamilton taking on 1-0 Whitefish in Class A; and No. 1 Manhattan facing No. 4 Florence and No. 5 Huntley Project clashing with No. 2 Three Forks in Class B.

10:35 p.m. | Breaking down an interesting night in Class B

10:32 p.m. | Class A roundup (and what a finish in Hamilton!)

Whitefish, unranked after Week 1, has held on to defeat No. 3 Hamilton in their Class A tussle. Hamilton scored a late touchdown needing only an extra point to tie it, but the kick was blocked and the Bulldogs improved to 2-0.

9:53 p.m. | Florence takes down No. 1

On Friday, Florence did what nobody could do last season: beat Manhattan. The Falcons, the No. 4-ranked team in Class B, defended its home turf against usually stingy Manhattan to win 33-20.

The game added to the some of the other Class B intrigue on Friday: No. 2 Three Forks (without QB Kanon Reichman) was felled by No. 5 Huntley Project 31-6, meaning each of the top-two teams in the MTN Sports rankings went down.

With that, we're going to break away to piece together our highlight packages for the 10 p.m. newscasts. Check back for more soon.

9:45 p.m. | Excitement in Sidney

In August, some Class A coaches thought Sidney could be a much improved squad this season. Well, the Eagles are now 2-0 after knocking off Laurel 28-20 on Friday, providing a lot of life to a program that once dominated the Class A ranks in the 1980s and early 1990s.

9:34 p.m. | Flathead's offensive outburst

We like to make note of impressive statistics around here, and Kalispell Flathead put up 539 yards of total offense tonight in a 41-0 win over Billings Senior. QB Bear Barker (what a name, by the way) threw for 269 yards and three TDs, and Leum Saisbury rushed for 184 yards and two more scores.

The Braves are now 2-0.

It's the opposite story for Senior. The Broncs fell to 0-2, and have now been outscored 110-0 so far this season.

9:21 p.m. | Final score updates

A few final scores have started trickling in. Here's a look, including what we already have:

Wild finish alert: In CMR's win over Sentinel, Beckett Crouch threw an 11-yard TD pass to Blake Katz with three seconds left to lift the Rustlers to the upset victory.

Class A

9:10 p.m. | C-Falls snuffed out

Columbia Falls, ranked No. 4 in Class A, could have potentially tied its game against No. 1 Frenchtown but the Broncs' Ean Johnson made the play of the game, intercepting a pass and returning it the other way for a touchdown. Frenchtown leads 28-13 with less than 2:00 remaining.

Elsewhere in Class A, No. 3 Hamilton has just taken a 15-13 advantage in its matchup with visiting Whitefish. That game is in the third quarter.

9:05 p.m. | No. 3 Fairfield, No. 5 Project both in control

In Class B, No. 3-ranked Fairifeld has taken a 42-12 lead over Anaconda at the end of the third quarter while No. 5 Huntley Project leads 24-6 over No. 2 Three Forks midway through the fourth.

8:47 p.m. | No. 2 Central averting trouble

It appears as though Class A No. 2 Billings Central is taking over its game at Havre. A late score before halftime put the Rams up 14-12 at the break, and three Michael Thomas TDs in the third quarter have extended the lead.

Also, Tyce Halter intercepted a Havre pass that was tipped and returned it to the end zone to help give Central a 41-12 advantage late in the third quarter. The Blue Ponies had a lot of momentum in the first half, but that has since slipped away.

8:34 p.m. | Project (so far) protecting home turf

In one of Class B's top matchups tonight, No. 5 Huntley Project leads No. 2 Three Forks 14-6 in the third quarter. Three Forks is without standout QB and Montana State commit Kanon Reichman, who was lost to injury in last week's win over Florence.

8:25 p.m. | Trey Ramey goes off for Glacier

It was an all-around great night for Kalispell Glacier in a 42-0 road romp over No. 3 Bozeman High. In particular, running back Trey Ramey rushed 13 times for 182 yards and a pair of scores for the Wolfpack, averaging 14.0 yards a pop.

Defensively, No. T5 Glacier still hasn't allowed a touchdown this season. On Friday, its defense stole a pair of turnovers, forced six punts and gave up just 233 total yards of offense.

8:12 p.m. | Whitefish blanking No. 3 Hamilton

Perhaps feeling slighted by being unranked in Class A, Whitefish is pitching a shutout on the road against No. 3 Hamilton and leads 13-0 at the end of one.

8:01 p.m. | Upset alert(s)?

Right now, a few teams a few teams are feeling some pressure.

In Class AA, Great Falls High is up on No. 2 Missoula Big Sky 14-7 late in the first half of their game in the Garden City. Kayden Davison gave the Bison the lead with a toe-tapping TD catch. That's in addition to CMR's 14-3 lead over No. T5 Sentinel.

(Also, No. T5 Kalispell Glacier has thoroughly made a statement on the road at No. 3 Bozeman High — the Wolfpack lead 35-0 going into the fourth quarter.)

In Class A, No. 2 Billings Central is in a fight with Havre on the road, though the Rams lead 14-12 at halftime. Havre scored touchdowns on an interception return off a mishandled pass and, later, a long TD throw.

And in the B ranks, No. 4 Florence had a 14-7 lead over No. 1 Manhattan. Stay tuned.

7:52 p.m. | Bombs away

Great Falls CMR is giving No. T5 Missoula Sentinel all it wants in the first half of their matchup in the Electric City.

7:40 p.m. | Big moments in big games

Defending Class A champion Frenchtown, ranked No. 1 in the classification, started well in its ranked clash with No. 4 Columbia Falls. Cooper Michaud has scored twice and the Broncs are out to a 14-0 lead. A recovery on a surprise onside kick gave Frenchtown an extra possession, and they took advantage of that.

And in Class B, No. 4 Florence has answered against No. 1 Manhattan with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead. Jake Schneiter has scored twice for the Falcons, the last on a 45-yard run.

7:28 p.m. | Gunnar gunning for more

Billings Central's Gunnar Larsen touched the ball four times last week — and scored a touchdown every time — in a 50 rout of Dillon.

He's had to work harder tonight in the Rams' game at Havre, but he caught a pass from Grady Martin for a TD in the first quarter to put No. 2 Central up 7-0 in their Class A game.

The Blue Ponies aren't breaking defensively yet. They've stopped Central on a couple fourth-down attempts so far.

7:17 p.m. | Top-ranked Manhattan wastes no time

The No. 1 team in Class B is on the board in their ranked showdown at Florence, as Tyson Pavlik connects with Matthew Fenno for a 17-yard TD strike.

Also, the downpour that was reported before kickoff quickly subsided.

7:07 p.m. | An interesting storyline in Butte

Tonight's game between Butte and Billings Skyview at Naranche Stadium features two teams looking for their first victory of the year. For Skyview, it will mark the head coaching debut of Justin Walker, who took the interim role early this week following the sudden resignation of coach John Simpson last Sunday.

Elsewhere, Laurel took the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown in its game against Sidney for a 7-0 advantage.

6:58 p.m. | Downpour in Florence

Sounds like players are going to have to deal with some wet conditions out west, at least early. MTN Sports' Kyle Hansen says it's pouring rain in Florence ahead of the Class B showdown between No. 1 Manhattan and No. 4-ranked Falcons.

It's supposed to clear up, but we'll see how this affects things.

6:51 p.m. | Reverse flea-flicker backfires

Leading 21-0 now, Glacier went for the jugular against Bozeman. But QB Cash Keim was hit by the Hawks' Walker Roodell as he threw on a reverse flea-flicker play and the ball was picked off.

Meanwhile, several other games are about ready to get going across the state.

6:33 p.m. | Hawks hurt by mistakes

Glacier took a 14-0 lead against Bozeman with 4:44 left in the opening quarter, but the Hawks countered with a drive that pushed deep into Wolfpack territory after a long pass by QB Van Shockley.

But two plays later Shockley lost the handle on a mesh with the running back and Glacier jumped on the ball. The Wolfpack have regained possession at the end of the quarter.

Otherwise, we wait for the remainder of tonight's games to get going.

6:19 p.m. | Glacier hits paydirt

After failing to find the end zone in last week's 6-3 loss to Billings West, Kalispell Glacier scored on its opening drive at Bozeman as running back Elijah Imperato takes a direct snap and runs untouched for a 15-yard TD.

We should also note that the Wolfpack are again without head coach Grady Bennett, who is still serving a two-game suspension for a Glacier recruiting violation.

6:05 p.m. | Looking back at Thursday's action

Tonight's first games are just now getting underway, but before we dig into that there were a few matchups on the schedule Thursday night, including an 8-Man contest between Park City and Harlowton. You can watch highlights of Park City's 74-6 rout below:
