MISSOULA — The Montana Grizzly soccer team defeated Eastern Washington 1-0 on Wednesday in Cheney, Washington, to win the Big Sky Conference regular-season championship. It is the first regular-season title for UM since 2014.

In typical fashion, the Griz played bend but don’t break defense before taking advantage of their own offensive chances. On just their second corner kick of the game in the 79th minute, Avery Adams found Kendall Furrow who headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Grizzlies the 1-0 lead and ultimately, the win.

The Griz finished with two corner kick attempts while the Eagles had 13. EWU had seven shots but just one on goal while the Griz had five attempts, three of which were on goal.

The win gives Montana a bye heading into next week’s Big Sky Conference tournament. The tournament runs Nov. 6-10 in Greeley, Colorado. The Grizzlies will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed and advance straight to the semifinals. Sac State earned the other bye with the No. 2 seed while EWU will head into the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will open in the quarterfinals against No. 6 Portland State.

The win also extends Montana's Big Sky-record unbeaten streak to 16 games. The Griz haven't lost a league game since Oct. 7, 2018, to Weber State. The Griz have since drawn or won every game in Big Sky play.
