CASPER, Wyo. – Coby Johnon, riding for Wyoming’s Sheridan College, became the first man to ride three bulls at the 71st College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR). Johnson, a freshman from Firth, Idaho, won the third round on Friday night with an 83-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s bull Over The Top.

Not only was that the highest score so far this week at the Casper Events Center, it gave Johnson a commanding lead in the overall standings with a total of 231.5 points. The second-generation CNFR qualifier, an animal science major, will have a one-round lead over the other bull riders in the top 12 who will compete Saturday night in the championship finals. Second place is Daylon Swearingen from Panola Junior College with 161 points.

Bridger Anderson, who rides for Northwestern Oklahoma State University and is from Carrington, North Dakota, took the overall lead in steer wrestling on Friday as well. His time of 4.7 seconds was seven-tenths of a second slower than Laramie Warren of Southeastern Oklahoma State (SEOSU), the final contestant in the round. But Anderson’s overall time of 12.4 seconds is nearly a full second faster than his closest challenger, while Warren finished three slots out of the finals in 15th.

Team ropers Dalton Titsworth and Kolton White, also of SEOSU, caught their steer in 6.5 seconds and have the overall lead with 19.8 seconds after three rounds. The pair of seniors are from Paola, Kansas, and Sumner, Texas, respectively.

Other highlights of the night included Macon Murphy of Panola College whose 7.7 seconds was, the fastest tie-down roping time of the finals; Samantha Kerns of Montana State University and Kody Criswell from South Plains College whose 2.2-second runs tied for first in the third round of breakaway roping; Hope Luttrell of Cochise College and Rickie Engesser of Tarleton State College who moved to second and third overall in breakaway. Janey Reeves, graduate student at the University of Idaho, qualified for the finals in both goat tying and breakaway, putting her in great position to win the all-around cowgirl title.

The championship round of the 2019 CNFR begins at 7 p.m. (MDT) Individual event champions, all-around champions and the championship men’s and women’s teams will be determined.
