MSU Billings teams place 5th at GNAC Championships; trio in top 15

COUER d’ALENE, Idaho – The Montana State University Billings golf teams each ended their season with a fifth place finish after the final round of the GNAC Golf Championships Tuesday at the Couer d’Alene Resort Golf Course.

Sarah Schroefel led MSUB’s women with a two-round total of 158, good for 10th place individually. Schroefel shot 77 Tuesday, one of three Jackets to shoot in the 70s along with Shealyn Hafer (78) and Kinsey Irvin (79). Hafer finished 11th overall with a 160. Irvin finished at 167, one shot ahead of teammate Renae Heisler at 168. Tierney Messmer finished at 174.

MSUB’s 652 total was just two shots behind Northwest Nazarene for fourth place. Concordia edged Simon Fraser for the team title, 613-616, while Western Washington’s Lacy Sheldon took home the individual title at (+3) 145.

Western Washington also produced the men’s individual winner, as Brody Bonfilio shot a -3, 210 three-round total, edging teammate Jordan Lee and Concordia’s Jake Wiley by one shot.

Caleb Trost was MSUB’s top finisher, firing a +8, 221 total, good for 14th place. Trost was within three of the lead after 10 holes, but played his final eight in +7, including a triple bogey on the Par 3 6th.

Garrett Woodin was second on the team at 225, but also could have been much higher. Woodin eagled No. 1 – his 10th hole of the day – but then made a nine on the Par 4 2nd. Woodin and Logan Martin tied for the team low Tuesday with 74’s. Martin finished at 228 overall. Payton Stott shot 232 with Riley Kaercher finishing at 244.

MSUB shot 904 as a team. Western Washington won the title at 851.
