MSU Billings women wrap up SSU Invitational in wet conditions

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Finishing up the two-round Sonoma State University Invitational on Tuesday, the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team notched a team score of 333 at Santa Rosa Golf Club.

The Yellowjackets finished in 11th place among the field of 15 teams, with a two-round total of 656 (323-333). “With the wet conditions we had today, the team got the most out of their rounds that they could,” said MSUB head coach Jeff Allen. “We are looking forward to hopefully their best play of the season in Coeur d’Alene.”

Senior Shealyn Hafer was MSUB’s top finisher, as she tied for 32nd place with a two-round score of 159 (81-78). Hafer improved by three strokes between rounds, finishing with a 78 Tuesday on the par-72, 6,000-yard course. Hafer’s final round featured a birdie on the par-4, 332-yard 13th hole, as she played the back-nine at 1-over-par 37.

Renae Heisler tied for 42nd place at the tournament, posting a two-round score of 162 (78-84). Heisler tied Hafer for the team’s lowest single-round score as she had a 78 on Monday.

Senior Sarah Schroefel finished in a tie for 59th place, with a two-round total of 167 (82-85). Schroefel made par on six holes on Tuesday.

Also competing among MSUB’s top-five was freshman Kinsey Irvin, who tied for 63rd place with a two-round score of 168 (82-86). Irvin’s round on Tuesday was highlighted by a birdie on the par-3, 126-yard sixth hole.

Sydney Rochford competed as an individual at the event, and took a tie for 76th place with a two-round total of 184 (94-90).

Concordia University from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference won the tournament, with a two-round score of 612 (300-312). The Cavaliers held off Sonoma State University and the Academy of Art, which each tied for second with scores of 614. CU’s Shantel Antonio tied for medalist honors, as she, Biapor Khunsri of ARTU, and Alli Kim of Point Loma Nazarene University all had two-round scores of 148.

THE BUZZ: Hafer was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day.

AHEAD: The 2019 GNAC Championships are next on the schedule for the Yellowjacket women. The two-round event runs April 22-23 at the Coeur d’Alene Resort in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
