GLENDIVE – Dawson Community College’s basketball women won their home opener Friday over Northwest College 64-58.

DCC came out strong quickly in the first quarter outscoring Northwest 8-0, and finishing the quarter 21-14: However, Northwest would quickly battle back with a run of their own, outscoring Dawson 16-10 in the second quarter. Both teams battled back and forth throughout the second half with Dawson leading by as many as 12 points along with 4 lead changes and 1 tie.

Sophomore Ejanae Coopwood led the game with 20 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Another sophomore Alexius Foster tallied 17 points and 6 rebounds. Off the bench freshman Centoria Roberts added 10 points. DCC caused 33 turnovers and capitalized with 31 points from it. Dawson also had 30 steals.

Saturday night would be a different story with Sheridan College leading the whole game and defeating Dawson 64-52. The Lady Generals outrebounded the Lady Bucs 50-40 and outscored the bench 28-10. Though DCC had 17 steals and caused 18 turnovers, Sheridan had 20 steals and caused 21 turnovers.

Alexius Foster would lead the game with 20 points, but no other Dawson player would be in double digit scoring. Leading rebounders were Ejanae Coopwood with 7, Sarah Miranda with 6 and Chynna Torrence with 5.

Head Coach Romeo Lagmay Jr added his comments to both games, “Right now we are still finding our niche as a team as to who can do what in finding their roles during the games. There is a lot of athleticism on this team, but our IQ has to improve. The team did show some fight in them during our loss against Sheridan when we were within 4 points in the last quarter, and that is something we can build on as we continue to try to pull out some victories throughout the early season.”
