Helena Capital sweeps 2019 crosstown track and field meet

HELENA — The Helena Capital Bruins took home four total team wins on Tuesday after all four squads beat their crosstown rivals. For full results from the meet click here.

In the boys meet, Bret Morris won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, clocking 11.09 and 22.72, respectively, for a pair of personal-best times. Alec Ladas won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.32, a new PR, climbing to No. 3 in the Class AA standings in the event.

Jason Key (40 feet, 8 inches) and Jacob Leslie (5-06) won the triple jump and high jump for the Bruins, who also earned a Shane Haller-victory in the 400 (52.87).

Jonah Fisher and Holden Sampson both won a pair of events for Helena High, with Fisher winning the 800 (2 minutes, 5.24 seconds) and 1,600 (4:44.26). Sampson’s 43-10 won the shot put title, while his 129-04 was also the top mark in the discus. Evan Rankin added a win in the javelin, throwing 164 feet.

In the girls events, Audrey Bloomquist and Leigha Carter placed first in the 100 and 200, posting times of 12.63 and 26.68, respectively. Bloomquist added wins in the long jump (16-01.75) and triple jump (35-09.75).

Melissa Moreni added a sweep in both hurdles races, finishing with personal bests in both — 14.97 in the 100-meter hurdles and 47.63 in the 300s — jumping to second and ninth in the Class AA rankings this spring.

Helena High freshman Odessa Zentz paced the Bengals with wins in the 400 (57.29) and 800 (2:21.24). The 400-meter dash time improved her personal- and state-best, where she leads Class AA by more than two seconds. Zentz’s teammate Kylie Hartnett, another freshman sensation, added wins in the 1,600 (5:12.96), a personal record, and 3,200 (1126.24).

Hartnett is ranked No. 6 in Class AA in both events.

Jamie Pickens tallied wins in the shot put (34-04.50) and javelin (121-05), while Courtney Matteucci’s 108-03 took the city discus title. Helena High freshman Haily Tolman won the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 11 inches.
