BUTTE — Four state championship football teams were represented on the Montana Shrine Game East All-Stars’ roster, but none of them had the impact that Class B Fairfield did Saturday night in Butte.
The East team scored four touchdowns in a 28-22 win, and all four were scored by Fairfield players. Future Montana Grizzly Ryder Meyer scored a rushing touchdown and hauled in a 39-yard receiving touchdown. Eagles tight end Derek Simmons caught two balls for 58 yards and two more scores. Simmons earned offensive MVP honors for the East team in one final game with several Fairfield teammates and the Eagle coaching staff.
“It was so fun. After our state championship we were happy, but we were so sad it was over,” Simmons said. “So it was so amazing to come and be able to get one more game with our coaching staff. It’s amazing to come and play for these kids that can’t play, they don’t have the opportunity. It’s amazing to come out and play with and against people that you’ve never played against — enemies and friends.”
Meyer and Simmons were joined on the East roster by receiver Dawson Allen and defensive lineman Walker Heckman.
