HELENA — Another Helena High athlete will be making their way to the next level as Ethan Nelson officially signed his letter of intent to run cross country for the Montana Tech Orediggers on Wednesday.

Nelson said he felt Montana Tech was the right choice for him because he could pursue his academic passions, as well as his athletic passions.

“I was thinking about becoming a civil engineer since I was little because I liked building with Legos and designing stuff, and I got into drafting club, which helped with basically designing stuff,” said Nelson. “As I was going along, I was looking for colleges and I looked at Montana Tech's program and I kind of liked it.”

Nelson finished just outside the top 50 at the Class AA state cross country meet in Kalispell to end the 2020 season with a time of 18:49.01. As for goals when he gets to Montana Tech, Nelson said he’s more interested in feeling out the competition before he sets any goals.

“Not really right now. Probably have some later on. But, yeah, I was thinking about at least having my first meet and just seeing where I'm at and then trying to improve from there,” said Nelson.
