HELENA — Earlier this month the Helena Capital Bruins began raising funds for cancer awareness to donate to the Saint Peter's Cancer Center in Helena.

On Oct. 29, the Bruins' volleyball program presented a check for $4,333. The funds were raised through sales of masks and their annual Pack the Place in Pink fundraiser. Tara Thompson, the Bruins' Freshman B coach, said they like to be able to give back because it’s something that they can do to help the community.

"It's a privilege to be going to the gym to play a game. Tying that back to receiving, receiving something like the privilege to play, and then giving back to the community that makes it happen is important," said Thompson. "I think the girls understand that when they kind of go with enthusiasm and gusto to get donations for this cause."

The current total shattered the Bruins' previous record total of about $3,300.
