District 8C: Belt, Roy-Winifred take care of business on Day 1

GREAT FALLS -- The District 8C tournament tipped off Thursday with first-round action at Great Falls High.

BOYS SCORES

Belt 54, Geraldine-Highwood 12

The Belt boys controlled their first-round matchup with Geraldine-Highwood from whistle to whistle, holding the Rivals to just five total field goals in a 54-12 win. Bridger Vogl outscored Geraldine-Highwood by himself with a game-high 13 points. The No. 1 seed Huskies advance to face No. 4 seed Hobson-Moore-Judith Gap in the district semifinals on Friday. The Titans had a first-round bye on Thursday.

Roy-Winifred 76, Winnett-Grass Range 47

Justin Stulc scored 30 points in a 76-47 win over Winnett-Grass Range. The Outlaws jumped out to a 26-8 lead in the first quarter and coasted the rest of the way. Tyler Fordyce added 16 points for the Outlaws, while Jacob Jessen led the Rams with 23 points. Roy-Winifred advances to face Centerville in the semifinals.

Centerville 60, Denton-Geyser-Stanford 59

Behind 18 points from Carson McGinness, the No. 5-seed Centerville Miners knocked off No. 3-seed Denton-Geyser-Stanford 60-59. The back-and-forth contest was tied multiple times in the fourth quarter. The Bearcats had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but two shots in the paint came up short in the final seconds. Parker Donaldson led all scorers with 21 points for DGS.

GIRLS GAMES

Belt 75, Winnett-Grass Range 14

Belt has won nine consecutive district titles and took the first step toward a 10th on Thursday with a dominant 75-14 win over Winnett-Grass Range. Five Huskies scored in double figures against the Rams, led by Kolby Pimperton with 15 points, Lindsey Paulson with 14, and Abby Gliko and Shelby Paulson each with 13. Belt led 31-5 after the first quarter. Tia Stahl and Shani Browning each scored five for the Rams.

Roy-Winifred 60, Centerville 18

Dyauni Boyce (13 points) and Madeline Heggem (11) combined for 24 points to lead the No. 2-seed Roy-Winifred Outlaws to a 60-18 win over Centerville. The Outlaws led 43-4 at halftime and forced a running clock midway through the second quarter. Roy-Winifred will face Denton-Geyser-Stanford in the 8C semifinals.

Denton-Geyser-Stanford 41, Geraldine-Highwood 38

Denton-Geyser-Stanford rallied from a 15-point deficit in the first half to top Geraldine-Highwood 41-38 behind 14 points from Sydney VonBergen. The Rivals jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the first half and led 23-13 at halftime. DGS trimmed the lead to eight entering the fourth quarter and then exploded for 22 points in the quarter to beat the Rivals. Ellie Meeks scored 12 to lead Geraldine-Highwood and Azzia Rowland added 10. Denton-Geyser-Stanford will face Roy-Winifred in the 8C semifinals.
