MSU-Northern gets first win, Carroll nearly hangs 100 in Thanksgiving Classic

HELENA — HELENA -- The MSU-Northern and Carroll College women's basketball teams both notched wins on Saturday. Northern defeated Valley City State 84-49, while Carroll to a 99-48 win over Lewis-Clark State.

MSU-Northern 84, Valley City State 49

Just a day after their first loss, the Montana State-Northern Skylights notched their first win of the season, downing the Valley City State Vikings 84-49 on Saturday.

From the opening tip, the Skylights seemed destined to get their first win of the season after running out to an 18-0 lead capped off by a L'Tia Lawrence bucket.

The Vikings were frozen on offense by the Skylights' defense, turning over the ball 17 times and being out-rebounded 56-30.

The Skylights had four players with double-digit points in the win with Mckenzie Gunter and Peyton Kehr putting up 23 and 20, respectively.

The Northern Skylights will now look to conference play according to their schedule when they take on the Rocky Mountain College Battlin Bears in Billing to open the Frontier Conference season on Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.

Carroll College 99, Lewis-Clark State 48

The Carroll College Fighting Saints remain perfect early in the season after downing former Frontier Conference for Lewis-Clark State 99-48.

Through the first half, the game was relatively tight, with Carroll holding just a nine-point lead at 46-37. In the second half, the Saitns exploded, going 8 of 15 from 3-point range, all while holding the Warriors to just 11 points.

Nearly every Carroll starter posted double-digit points. Dani Wagner led the pack with 24, and the Fighting Saints saw double-digit efforts off the bench from Maddie Geritz and Genesis Wilkinson.

The Saints forced 16 turnovers in the game, recorded 25 assists and out-rebounded the Warriors 47-25.

Carroll College will face a stiff test on Monday when they head to Oregon to take on the Oregon State Beavers.
