MANHATTAN -- The Manhattan football team has been tearing apart all of its competition so far this season. Through four games this season, the Tigers were outscoring their opponents 169-28, including two shutout games. On Friday, they ran past Columbus 40-20.
That dominance on both sides of the ball has led Manhattan to rise through the Class B polls to No. 3 in the MontanaSports.com power rankings. The philosophy for Manhattan: start fast and never let off the gas.
"As an offense that's one of our big goals, is to come out firing and we've done a great job of that," said Tigers senior quarterback Lane Veltkamp.
"It's pretty important (that we) get the ball first and just score and just keep your foot on the throttle the whole game," added senior running back Garrit Weeda.
As undefeated Manhattan continues to win, the target on its back gets bigger. But it's hard to stop a well-oiled machine.
"Sometimes you'd rather just be the underdog, people overlook you," Weeda said. "But it's pretty fun being one of the No. 1 teams in the conference and have people always chasing you."
