LIBBY -- In a muddy game between Western A foes, Libby stunned Frenchtown 8-6 on Friday night to jump past the Broncs in the conference standings. The Loggers unofficially clinched the league's No. 3 seed in the upcoming playoffs, which begin next week.
Mud slowed the action Friday night, as the two teams traded defensive blows while looking for an offensive outburst. The Loggers struck first, scoring on a safety in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Libby added cushion late in the contest with a touchdown, but after the point-after was no good, Frenchtown returned the ensuing kickoff some 70 yards. The Broncs' two-point try, which would have tied the game, was no good.
Libby's win made several moves in the Western A standings, dropping Frenchtown from a potential three-way tie with Hamilton and Dillon for the top spot in the league. Hamilton and Dillon each won Friday to finish 8-1, but the Beavers earned the conference title based on their head-to-head win over the Broncs on Sept. 20, a 26-25 victory.
Both Dillon and Hamilton earn byes in the upcoming playoffs.
Miles City finished as the lone Class A unbeaten in the regular season after downing Sidney 46-6. The Cowboys earned the Eastern A title, and will be joined by Laurel with byes in the opening round of the playoffs next weekend.
Other games with playoff implications Friday night saw Havre defeat Lewistown 30-8, leapfrogging the Eagles for the No. 4 seed in the East. Lewistown travels to Havre in the opening round of the postseason. Butte Central clinched a playoff berth via its 21-14 win over Columbia Falls.
