Montana State Bobcats not letting hot Big Sky start get to their heads

BOZEMAN – For the first time in five years, the Montana State men’s basketball team is undefeated through two games in conference play.

Both wins came in tough fashion on the road, a 104-point effort to down Southern Utah and an overtime victory against NAU. But head coach Brian Fish is taking the Bobcats’ hot start with a grain of salt because it’s too early to shape the Big Sky Conference race. He knows every game will be a battle from here on out.

“You start the league play, it’s an 18-lap race and each game is one lap around the track,” said Fish. “To get two wins is good. By no means is it that big a deal as far as you start 0-2 or 2-0 because there is so many games left. But it’s good, it gives the guys energy and stuff like that.”

Even though they are only two games into the conference, Fish can tell this is going to be a tough year.

“Statistically I think we’ve gone from the 28th-best league to the 16th-best league. I’m worried about each team cannibalizing each other, because there is no easy opponents this year,” said Fish.

Montana State faces a tough opponent on Thursday against Northern Colorado, a team that not only is undefeated in the Big Sky Conference, but owns the best overall record in the conference. The Bobcats face the Bears at home at 7 p.m.
