CALDWELL, Idaho – Sometimes what happens outside of the arena is just as important as the competition in it. Such was the case at the third performance of the 85th annual Caldwell Night Rodeo.
Power of Pink Night and raises money for local breast health screenings. Attendance set a record with $1 from every ticket sold going to the fund.
Additionally, a flag was auctioned off during the rodeo, and golf tournaments and runs have been held. This year over $50,000 was raised to help the uninsured, underinsured and underserved Treasure Valley residents gain access to breast health screening.
When the final tally is made, the funds will be split between West Valley Medical Center and Saint Alphonsus Medical Center who will use it to pay for mammograms and screening.
And while the stands were filled with plenty of pink attire, rodeo contestants were still giving it there all in hopes of securing a spot in Saturday night’s championships. One of those contestants who will be back in two nights was Anthony Thomas from Humble, Texas.
Thomas is originally from Australia. He first came over and competed in rodeos in Canada while working on a ranch. He made his way here and joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2013. He had his best year here in 2016 when he finished 25th in the world standings.
Thomas rode Burch Rodeo’s Sunday Services for 82 points, the high-marked ride of the night. That put him sixth overall. He will need to wait through Friday night’s rodeo to see if that score is high enough to get him back here Saturday night.
The bulls once again dominated on Thursday with just one qualified ride. Shad Winn from Westmoreland, Kansas was 79.5-points on Powder River Rodeo’s bull number 511. He is currently in fourth place and is nearly assured a check. The top eight bull riders at the conclusion of Saturday night’s rodeo all get paid.
Friday night’s rodeo is Patriot night and will again raise money for local Veterans’ charities. Rodeo action will begin at 8 p.m.
