NEW YORK CITY – On the first night of action for the season-launch PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast Major in New York City, Mason Taylor (Maypearl, Texas) recorded the first 90-point ride of 2020 to win the 15/15 Bucking Battle at the Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden, presented by Ariat, inside Madison Square Garden.

“The energy here is ridiculous,” Taylor said moments after stepping off the Can-Am Cage. “I honestly don’t believe we get to do what we love to in this building. It’s surreal. Muhammad Ali fought here so I knew I had to step up.

“I just keep it simple. You can’t have no quit or be weak-hearted. You need to be mentally tough. I felt great tonight.”

Taylor bested Marquis Metal Works’ Bill The Butcher (Paradigm Bull Co./Marquis Metal Works) for 90 points in the Big Apple for the second 90-point ride of his premier series career.

Taylor’s special round victory earned him 50 world points and a check for $7,500.

As one of 20 riders to record a score in the event’s opening round, Taylor also netted 0.5 world points after he tied for 12th in Round 1. He reached the 8 aboard Game On (C Check Bucking Bulls) for 85 points.

In the early 2020 PBR world rankings, Taylor is now No. 7.

Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) finished second in the 15/15 Bucking Battle to earn $5,500 and 40 world points, rising to No. 12 in the world. The 2016 PBR World Champion covered Lil 2 Train (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) for 89.5 points.

The 8-second effort was a rebound from his buckoff earlier in the night. In Round 1, Davis was bested in 3.39 seconds by Little Bob (BMC Bucking Bulls/Jenkins Cattle Co.).

Third in the 15/15 Bucking Battle was Derek Kolbaba (Walla Walla, Washington) who rode Sugar Boom Boom (Cornwell Bucking Bulls/Circle G) for 89.25 points. The Washington native also finished inside the Top 5 in Round 1, recording the fifth-best score when he reached the whistle on Harold’s Genuine Risk (M Rafter E Bucking Bulls) for 88 points.

Kolbaba’ s 2-for-2 showing on Friday night inside “The World’s Most Famous Arena” allowed him to surge to the top of the world standings, where he is now tied for No. 1 alongside Lachlan Richardson (Gresford, New South Wales, Australia).

Thus far in New York City, Kolbaba has netted $6,000 and 46 world points.

Ryan Dirteater (Hulbert, Oklahoma) was the final rider to cover his bovine athlete opponent in the 15/15 Bucking Battle, finishing fourth to earn $3,500 and 30 world points. The recently engaged Oklahoman rode Nailed (Kruger Bucking Bulls) for 88 points.

A rematch, the out was the first qualified ride for Dirteater aboard the bull, bested in 2.68 seconds in their first meeting at the 2017 Unleash The Beast event in Kansas City, Missouri.

The 30-year-old also delivered a qualified ride in Round 1 and is now 2-for-2 at the season-launch event. His first round ride, the seventh-best score, was recorded atop Evil Intentions (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) for 87.25 points to earn him an additional $800 and eight world points.

On the hunt for his first PBR World Championship, Dirteater is now No. 13 in the world.

Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil) stole the show in Round 1 with an 89.5-point ride on Midnight Rock (Cord McCoy/ Shotgun Bulls).

Propelling him to a $6,500 payday, the veteran Brazilian also earned 30 word points, climbing to No. 8 in the world.

The score allowed Aparecido to narrowly edge out his countryman Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) who finished runner-up in the first round. Vieira rode Western Skies (Cord McCoy/ Twisted T/ Ladd/ Murphy), the high-marked bull of Round 1 with a 44-point bull score, for 89.25 points to earn $5,000 and 20 world points.

Two-time PBR World Champion and reigning Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden event winner Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) tied with 2018 PBR World Champion Kaique Pacheco for third after both delivered matching 88.25-point rides.

Lockwood bested Birthday Cake (M Rafter E Bucking Bulls/Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve), while Pacheco covered Viper (Cord McCoy/Big Sky Bulls LLC).

Each champion bull rider earned $3,250 and 13 world points.

Lockwood is now No. 28 in the world, while Pacheco, who began the season with great success in Australia, is No. 6.
