DENVER -- Thursday was a good day for saddle bronc rider Lefty Holman at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

The Visalia, California resident joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2017. Last year he was on track for a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification after winning the 100th anniversary of the Reno (Nevada) Rodeo. That win had him 20th in the world standings and ready to hit the trail for the busy summer run.

Six weeks later, he was back home waiting to have surgery. At Cheyenne Frontier Days, he heard his knee pop. With torn ligaments and other damage, he spent the rest of the season dealing with the injury. He is back in a big way at the National Western.

Holman had his first horse in the Denver Coliseum Thursday morning at the 10:30 a.m. performance. He had a solid effort on Vold Rodeo’s horse Felicity scoring 81.5 points. Thursday evening, he got on another horse from the Vold’s named Sun Pop.

That ride moved him to the top of the overall standings here and will see him advancing to Saturday’s semifinals. When the judges added up their scores, Holman had an 87.5 by his name. His 169 is one-half of a point ahead of Kobyn Williams who competed here earlier in the show.

Rodeo fans may not know who bull rider Levi Gray is, but if he continues to ride like he did here on Thursday, he will become very recognizable. Gray, from Dairy, Oregon, had his first year of competition in 2019 and like Holman faced injuries in late July.

He is healthy now and became the eighth rider to get scores on both of his bulls. Gray had 79 and 80.5 point rides and is now in third place overall with 159.5 points. He is also making plans to be here for Saturday’s semifinals.

The final set of rodeo contestants will compete in two performances on Friday at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. They will all be trying to move among the top 24 in the overall standings to have a chance at this weekend’s payday.
