(San Antonio Rodeo release)

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 15, 2020) – With two performances at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo on Saturday, there was plenty of action in the AT&T Center.

Bracket 4 was completed at the matinee performance, then Bracket 5 started Saturday evening. The high-money earner in Bracket 4 was saddle bronc rider Sterling Crawley from Huntsville, Texas. Crawley finished at the top of the leaderboard in round one, was fourth in round two and second on Saturday afternoon.

He was one point behind Welch, Oklahoma’s Hardy Braden who scored 84 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Look Again. Crawley’s 83-point ride was on Calgary Stampede’s Shoshone Mountain. It added $2,000 to his previous earnings and he will enter the semifinals with $5,250.

That is a place that he is very excited about. He qualified for the semifinals here two years ago and was in contention for the championship. Then, during the second round of the Semifinals, disaster struck. He came off right after the eight seconds were up, landed wrong, broke his collarbone and was sidelined for six weeks. Jacob’s Crawley, Sterling’s older brother went on to win the saddle bronc riding here that year.

“I watched Jacobs win this rodeo and it’s one that everyone wants to win,” Sterling said. “This is one of those rodeos that you look forward to all year long. Even if you don’t win the title, it can sure set you up for the rest of the season. It gets your momentum going. It’s on everyone’s bucket list.”

Saturday night’s rodeo saw the fastest run in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association sanctioned barrel race. Jimmie Smith, the 2018 rookie of the year took her great mare, Lena on the Rocks around the pattern in a blazing 13.84 seconds. Prior to Bracket 5, the fast time at this year’s rodeo was a 13.90 run by Emily Miller in Bracket 1.

Smith and the other contestants in Bracket 5 will have their second and third rounds of competition on Sunday at the matinee and evening performances where Semifinals qualifiers will be determined. Semifinals 1 will be Monday and Tuesday nights. Semifinals 2 is Wednesday and Thursday.

Sunday’s rodeo action starts at 1 and 7 p.m.
