DENVER - One of the youngest tie-down ropers at this year’s National Western Stock Show Rodeo nearly broke an arena record during the third performance of the rodeo in the Denver Coliseum.

Shad Mayfield of Clovis, New Mexico stopped the clock in 6.9 seconds, just one-tenth of a second off of arena records that were set here in 2018. Both Marty Yates and Shane Hanchey roped and tied calves in 6.8 seconds here in 2018.

Mayfield is at the beginning of what could be a stellar and long career in the rodeo arena. Last year at this time he was finishing high school and competing at a few pro rodeos, including Denver’s. He also competed in high school rodeos and qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo in July, which he won.

He continued competing in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and with a big end-of-season push qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last December. Mayfield finished the 2019 season in 12th place with $127,075 in earnings.

He turned 19 last November and was the first contestant born in this century to compete for a world championship. Now, he is using everything he learned to get back to Las Vegas again this December. A big win at the National Western would certainly help him accomplish that. Mayfield will rope his second calf at the Saturday morning performance.

All the contestants at the morning performance will be in their second round. Then a new set will have their first and second opportunities during the matinee and evening performances. Competition starts at 11 a.m., 3:30 and 8 p.m. The 114th annual National Western Stock Show, the best 16 days in January, continues through Jan. 26.
