BOZEMAN — COVID-19 has shut a lot of things down, but on a beautiful mid-March day like Saturday, people are participating in socially isolated activities, such as rock climbing or even fly fishing.
“It’s a beautiful day, so I decided to come out and see how the fishing was going,” said Jared Arnold, a local guide from Bozeman.
Fly fishing is something that people can enjoy on their own, especially at a time when people are worried about being too close to others.
“Fly fishing is custom made for social distancing and being by yourself," said Bill Vandenbos, who is a local fly fisherman.
It's a peaceful thing that one could do outdoors, especially in a state that is full of beauty.
"There’s no better way to social distance yourself than fly fishing," Arnold said. "Listening to the stream, possibly catching a fish, the wildlife that Montana offers, it’s a great way to break up the monotony of being at home.”
With the shutdown, it has brought many people out to enjoy the outdoors, more than usual.
“Normally this time of year you might see two or three other guys out. But it’s pretty busy, a lot of hikers, people walking their dogs, other fishermen," said Arnold. "People are definitely getting out and about. "
Even if the fish are, or are not biting, fly fishing is a good escape.
“Even when the fish aren’t biting, it’s much better than being at home and watching all the other stuff unfolding right now," Arnold said.
