Bozeman girls, Gallatin boys claim Eastern AA golf crowns

BILLINGS -- Bozeman High's girls entered Friday with a 15-shot lead over Billings West after Thursday's first round at Peter Yegen Golf Club and cruised to a 29-shot victory at the Eastern AA divisional golf tournament on Friday at Lake Hills Golf Course.

The Hawks took the top two individual spots, as Sami Yates claimed the individual title with a two-day total of 149, six shots over par. Cooper Knarr finished second four shots back of Yates.

Bozeman had four golfers in the top 16, and the Hawks' fifth-place golfer placed 19th overall.

Billings West finished second on the back of Kadence Fischer, who finished third individually seven shots back of Yates. Bella Johnson carded a tie for 10th for West, which had four golfers in the top 17.

Billings Senior finished third and Billings Skyview finished fourth.

Bozeman Gallatin's boys won the Eastern AA in a runaway on Friday. Gallatin built a 21-shot lead on the opening day behind brothers Justus and Jordan Verge.

Justus Verge would claim the individual title Friday, firing a 3-under-par 69 that included a stretch of five birdies in six holes. Justus Verge shot 68 on Thursday

Justus Verge needed to play well on Friday, as runner-up Eli Groshelle of Great Falls CMR entered the day one shot back after shooting 69 on Thursday. Groshelle would falter, shooting a 3-over 75 on Friday.

Jordan Verge finished one shot back of Groshelle in third place after shooting an even-par 73 on Friday.

Gallatin's Ramey Lloyd and Stevie Voigt tied for sixth place at 12-over-par for the tournament. Both Lloyd and Voigt shot 74 on Thursday.

The State AA golf tournament will take place next weekend at Missoula Country Club.
