BOZEMAN -- The Montana State football program officially introduced its newest offensive coordinator on Monday, as Justin Udy spoke to the media for the first time since being hired last week.

Udy comes to Montana State from Texas Tech where he was an offensive quality control analyst. He has had his eye on Montana State, even interviewing for the wide receivers coaching job last year. Although EriK Frazier won that job, Udy applied once again for the offensive coordinator job. Now he will lead a university he's long wanted to be a part of.

"(Montana State) was a spot that out of high school I considered coming and trying to walk on and play here. So I've always kind of had a soft spot for Bozeman and Montana State. We had the opportunity to play them last year when I was at Tech and it was kind of an eye-opener at how much the program had really grown under coach (Jeff) Choate," said Udy.

Udy attended Eastern Oregon where he played quarterback and wide receiver. Soon after, he began his coaching career as an assistant with the Mountaineers.

Choate only did a phone interview with Udy a season ago for the wideouts job, and he knew it wasn't the right fit for Udy because there were bigger things ahead.

"Literally after we got off the phone, I kind of looked at (former offensive coordinator Matt Miller) and I was like, 'This guy is more of a coordinator than he is a wide receivers coach.' Because when we talked about offensive football (Udy's mindset) was very broad-based, talking big-picture stuff," said Choate. "This is the right fit for him as the play caller here now."
