MISSOULA — The Montana Grizzlies went into the 2019 soccer season with a ton of youth on their team. Through the first nine games the Griz are 1-5-3, but they've played much better than their record shows.
Their opponents have been tough, to say the least. In three games against top-tier programs Gonzaga, California and San Francisco, Montana only surrendered three goals, losing 1-0 in each of those contests.
The Griz picked up their first win against a Cal Poly team that had been surrendering goals in the final 20 minutes of their prior matches. Montana went in with that game plan and executed it. The Griz scored in the 79th minute and took the win, 1-0.
Although they only have one win to show for it, junior forward Alexa Coyle praised how quickly the the Griz have moved along.
"We've taken a lot of positives from the preseason, but I think we're also not satisfied yet. So I think that's a great place to be going into a conference, because we have a lot to build off of but we are hungry for more. We are excited, and I think this weekend is a great opportunity and they are going to be a great two games against two great teams, but we are super excited and we are ready to get after conference," said Coyle.
The Griz are at Idaho on Friday and at Eastern Washington on Sunday.
