GREAT FALLS — It’s no secret that baseball participation in Montana is down across all levels, and Great Falls has seen the effects. For instance, an American Legion program from the Electric City hasn’t won a state title since the 1970s, and ever since, consistency has been hard to come by. But Great Falls native and former minor league player Ryan Yurek wants to help.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, the Electric City Baseball Academy will be hosting tryouts for the 2020 season at the Great Falls Americans Little League Complex. The organization, whose teams are called the Great Falls Lightning, plays in travel tournaments and is open to children ages 8-14.

Yurek said the group’s main goal is getting more Great Falls kids interested in baseball from a young age and then developing and improving them throughout the years.

“We’re not going to close the door on any kid in this town," Yurek said. "Any kid that wants to try to earn a position on one of our teams, we want them to come. We want them to be there on Saturday."

According to Yurek, the Lightning are having successful seasons earlier than anticipated, and he hopes the players stick with baseball through the Legion level and beyond.

"If you can develop an individual kid and see improvements week to week, year to year, and then you can develop the team to where they play ball together week to week, the results will come down the line," Yurek said. "Hopefully by the time this initial group of kids gets to the point where they’re competing to go to the next level, they’re prepared and then that helps the next program be successful for years to come.”
