DENVER – There were some very happy rodeo contestants leaving the National Western Stock Show on Sunday night.

It took 19 preliminary performances to bring the best to the Denver Coliseum on Sunday for the Championship Finals where the lion’s share of nearly half-a-million in prize money was distributed. The Champions in each of the events got trophy buckles to commemorate their wins in front of a sold-out crowd.

The biggest winner from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association was steer wrestler Ty Erickson from Helena, Montana. Erickson has gotten some money out of Denver’s rodeo before and has watched his traveling partners claim the buckles. This year it was his alone. His success came aboard the two-time steer wrestling horse of the year, “Scooter” whose registered name is Canted Plan. Erickson added $10,024 to his checking account for bringing three steers to the ground in 11.9 seconds.

The biggest winner of the rodeo is a member of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. Jennifer Sharp from Montgomery, Texas, rode Six French Smooches to the win after stopping the clock in 15.26 seconds. Sharp and “Smooches” had the fastest time on three runs, 45.89 seconds to win $11,982.

Other Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association champions here were Clay Smith from Broken Bow, Oklahoma and Jake Long from Coffeyville, Kansas in the team roping; Clint Laye from Cadogan, Alberta in the bareback riding; Spencer Wright from Milford, Utah in saddle bronc riding; Cooper Martin, from Alma, Kan.; in tie-down roping; and Brody Yeary from Morgan Mill, Texas in the bull riding.
