LAS VEGAS – After back-to-back disappointing performances, Caleb Bennett was in danger of falling out of the PRCA World Bareback title race before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo reached the halfway point.

A Round 4 win Sunday brought him right back in it.

Bennett, who now makes his home in Corvallis, rode Just Peachy to 86.5 points, edging Kaycee Feild by half a point to win the $26,231 first-place check and climb within $13,000 of World No. 1 Tim O’Connell. Bennett is still ninth in the NFR average, but has six more rounds to make up ground in the high-paying rodeo.

In steer wrestling, Helena cowboy Ty Erickson earned a sixth-place check in Round 4 Sunday with a 4.2-second run. Erickson is up to seventh in the average, while Stevensville native Bridger Chambers is fourth after a 6.0 in Round 4.

It was a tough night for the Tryan family. Three-time world header champion Clay Tryan hooked his calf’s front left leg and couldn’t get it unstuck before the timer, resulting in a no score. Heeler Chase Tryan, meanwhile, never got a chance, as partner Bubba Buckaloo missed the head. Both Tryans are currently out of NFR average contention.

The stock won Round 4 in saddle bronc. Only five of the 15 contestants managed a qualified ride. Former Montana State Bobcat Cort Scheer was one of them, earning 78.5 points aboard Easter Bunny. That was fifth in the round, but kept him at No. 1 in the average by nine points over CoBurn Bradshaw. They are the only two with four qualified so far.

Deer Lodge’s Chase Brooks was bucked off for the third time in four rounds, while Wyoming’s Brody Cress is now 0-4 at the 2018 NFR.

Twenty-three-time world champion Trevor Brazile turned back the clock to win tie-down roping in Round 4 with a 6.8-second run. It’s the fastest of the rodeo so far.

Former Circle cowgirl Lisa Lockhart didn’t knock over a barrel in Round 4, but her 14.06 wasn’t fast enough to get into the money.

Finally, Edgar’s Parker Breding had a big night as one of just three bull riders to hang on Sunday night. Breding scored 81 points on Hooey to claim third in Round 4, and move up to second in the average after World No. 1 Sage Steele Kimzey was bucked off his re-ride bull. Breding, No. 2 in the world, and average leader Joe Frost are the only two to stay on three bulls so far.

Round 5 of 10 is set for Monday night at 7:00 p.m. PST.
