(Cody Stampede release by Susan Kanode)

CODY, Wyo. J.W. Harris was one happy bull rider when he got off of Frontier Rodeo’s After All at the final performance of the Cody Stampede.

After All threw everything but a knife at the four-time world champion from Goldthwaite, Texas. Harris matched the bull move for move and weathered the storm. When the judges added up their scores, he had a 92 by his name and was at the top of the leaderboard.

That 92 couldn’t have come at a better time. Harris earned $8,629 for his efforts which should give him a boost in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings. Prior to Cody’s Fourth of July rodeo, he was outside of the top 20. He has had a slow Fourth until he got here.

“That was fun,” Harris said of the ride. “Cody has always been one of my favorite rodeos. I bring my family, we go to Yellowstone and try to take in as much as we can. I’ve had some success here in the past but never won it. This is cool.”

Gavin DeRose had the biggest win of his career at Stampede Park on Wednesday. He was the big winner of the entire rodeo after winning the bareback riding here. DeRose, from Kamloops, British Columbia scored 86 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Tip Off to win $10,222. Tip Off also took last years bareback winner to the pay window. Tyler Nelson from Victor, Idaho rode the mare here on July 2nd for 85 points. Altogether, Tip Off won $17,038 for contestants at the 99th Cody Stampede.

Plans are underway for the 100th Cody Stampede, which will be held at Stampede Park over the Fourth of July holiday in 2019. The legendary Cody Nite Rodeo will start back on it’s regular schedule July 5.
