SAN ANTONIO – The Semifinals at the 2018 edition of the San Antonio were filled with excitement in every event but the barrel racing and team roping gave fans a lot to cheer about.

During Semifinals 1, Hailey Kinsel from Cotulla, Texas, set a new barrel racing record of 13.60 seconds in the AT&T Center. Then on the final night, team ropers Coleman Proctor from Pryor, Oklahoma and Billie Jack Saebens from Nowata, Oklahoma, set a record with a 3.7-second run.

The previous record of 3.8 happened in 2012. Kaleb Driggers from Albany, Georgia and Jade Corkill from Fallon, Nevada, were the men that held onto the fast time for six years.

With Proctor doing the heading and Saebens heeling, they earned the first-place check in the second round of Semifinals 2. They had already won $5,351 here. Adding that to the $4,459 they won on Friday, they advanced to the in second place finals with $9,810 won.

Reigning world champions Erich Rogers and Cory Petska had the top spot in the earnings category. The Arizona team ropers each won $10,478 during their bracket and in the first round of the semifinals. They came up empty on Friday, but because San Antonio’s rodeo is based on money rather than times or scores, they will be roping for a championship here on Saturday night.

Sterling Crawley, from Stephenville, Texas, had fans on the edge of their seats after he made a great ride in the saddle bronc riding. He came off after the eight-second buzzer, landed hard on his back and was assisted from the arena. The Justin Sportsmedicine Team evaluated him onsite. He has a fractured collar bone on his right side. Crawley rides right handed and if he can lift his arm in the morning he will have treatment and they will immobilize it so he can ride in the finals. He placed second Friday night behind Utah’s CoBurn Bradshaw who had an 84.5.

Oklahoma was well represented in the bull riding as well. Garrett Tribble from Bristow was the lone man to ride for eight seconds in the AT&T Center Friday. Normally, the top four finishers get checks. But since Tribble was the only successful rider, he got all of the prize money. He entered with $2,675 and had to place at least second to get to ride again in the finals. Instead he won it all, $11,148, and will advance in second place. Tribble’s success came aboard D&H Cattle Company’s Midnight Show and it was good for 89.5 points.

“This came at a really good time,” Tribble said. “I needed the money to get to the finals here and I need it in the world standings. The crowd was cheering a lot. I think they were happy to see that somebody rode.”

Tribble along with all the other bull riders that rode in the semifinals and other money winners from the rodeo will compete in the Xtreme Bulls on Saturday at 1 p.m. There will be $100,000 in prize money paid at that event. Ten of those bull riders will ride again Saturday night at the finals where they will hope to be crowned a San Antonio Rodeo champion. The final round of competition starts at 7:30 p.m. Champions in each event will be crowned and the bulk of the $1.7 million will be paid.
