SAN ANTONIO – The team roping arena-record time of 3.8 seconds at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo came dangerously close to falling on Sunday.

Bracket 5 of the tournament-style rodeo had their first and second rounds of competition. The matinee performance saw the fastest run in team roping in six years. With Cody Snow from Los Olivos, California heading and Wesley Thorp from Throckmorton, Texas, doing the heeling, they stopped the clock in 3.8 seconds. This tied the arena record set by Kaleb Driggers from Hoboken, Georgia and Jade Corkill from Fallon, Nevada set in 2012.

Snow and Thorp started roping together just over a year ago and were successful enough in 2017 to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. They won the buckle for the fastest time in the sixth round in Las Vegas last December. Their partnership has continued this year and they are building on success. When they entered the San Antonio Rodeo, Snow, Snow was in third place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association heading world standings and Thorp was one spot behind in the heeling at fourth.

Thorp is also a two-time National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion. He won consecutive titles in 2016 and 2017 at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming. Thorp won those titles for Texas Tech University at Lubbock where he has been working on a business degree.

Unfortunately, they had a no-time in the second round. While that was a disappointment, it won’t count against them. At most rodeos times and scores are added together for contestants to advance to the next level. At the $1.7-million San Antonio Rodeo, it is all based on money. So, even though Snow and Thorp were shut out in round two, the $2,378 that they won in the first round is likely to be enough for them to advance to the Semifinals. And they still have one more steer to rope in the AT&T Center arena and could add to that on Monday night.

The big money earner in this bracket so far is saddle bronc rider Allen Boore from Axtell, Utah. Boore won both rounds in his signature event. His first-round win was aboard a Wyoming bucking horse named Professional Lunatic from Burch Rodeo. Then on Sunday evening he rode another Burch horse, Maria Bartimoro for the win. His 82-point ride in the matinee and 83 at the evening performance have earned him $4,756 so far.

That’s important for the man who is trying to win his first San Antonio Championship and all of the money and prizes that go with that. Boore, who qualified for the 2016 NFR just missed being among the top 15 that compete for world titles last year. He was 18th. He is not currently ranked, but a big win here would give him a big boost in the world standings.

The rodeo continues here on Monday night with the completion of the preliminary brackets. Action starts at 7 p.m. and at it’s conclusion, Semifinals qualifiers from Bracket 5 will be determined.
