SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 13, 2018) – Clayton Hass from Weatherford, Texas, did something at the San Antonio Rodeo that no other contestant has done so far. He got money in more than one event during one performance.
Hass won the first round of steer wrestling with a 3.5=second run. After making the victory lap around the arena, he was rushing back to get on his team roping horse and be ready to compete again. Hass did the heading for John Robertson, from Polson, Montana. They stopped the clock in 5.3 seconds to finish second. Hass has now become the first contestant who has the potential of qualifying for the Semifinals in two events. He earned $4,062 in the AT&T Center on Tuesday night, $2,378 in steer wrestling and $1,784 in team roping.
The defending world champions, Erich Rogers and Cory Petska, both from Arizona, had the fastest team roping run. With Rogers heading and Petska heeling, they had a 5.0-second run and got to make their own victory lap. Rogers and Petska are totally familiar with the traditions here at San Antonio. They won this rodeo in 2014, earning over $20,000. If that happens again, the world champions will be on pace for another title.
Bareback riding was tough on Tuesday. The top four positions were separated by less than two points. Former world champion and champion here, Will Lowe, from Canyon, Texas, won the round with an 82.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s YYC Departing. Right behind him with 82 was Bill Tutor, from Huntsville, Texas, with an 82. Then, Oregon’s Steven Peebles had an 81.5. The fourth and final paycheck went to another Texan, Tilden Hooper, who had an 81.
Sage Kimzey, from Strong City, Oklahoma, has won over $100,000 at this rodeo in the past four years. He added to that here on Tuesday with a win on Powder River Rodeo’s bull named Peace Out. Kimzey was one of two men to ride and as such, got more money than the slated payout of $2,378. When it was all added up, he won $3,270. Dylan Hice Vick, from Escalon, California, finished second with a 79 to earn $2,675.
Kimzey has won the bull riding world title the last four consecutive years. He won his fourth gold buckle last December in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Then the first of the year, he broke his pelvis. He has been on a handful of bulls, but is riding with the form that has earned him those championships. He rode earlier this week at the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo and was 91 points.
Kimzey is ready to get on three in a row here, then will have time to go to other rodeos and rest before the Semifinals. He also will be competing in the Xtreme Bulls here on Feb. 24th He has the potential to get on eight bulls in the AT&T Center.
The second round of Bracket Bracket 3 beings at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Contestants will start seeing their money add up and will have semifinals qualifications on their minds. They are all hoping to advance to the Semifinals then the Finals to have an opportunity to compete for the lion’s share of $1.7 million here.
