COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Winning events during the PRCA’s winter run can propel a cowboy to future success. That’s exactly what bull riders Jordan Hansen and Riker Carter are hoping for after triumphs this past weekend.
Hansen and Carter each won Division 2 Xtreme Bulls events on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27, respectively, in Rapid City, S.D.
Hansen earned a $3,807 first-place check with his 87.5-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s No. +8 during the first night of Xtreme Bulls action.
“I haven’t been making much going to winter rodeos this year, and it is definitely a good confidence-booster to get that win,” said Hansen, 24. “I had never seen that bull before, but I heard quite a few good things about him. When I nodded, he bucked and then he turned back to the right and stayed spinning the whole time.”
The Ponoka, Alberta, cowboy moved up to 58th place in the Jan. 29 PRCA World Standings with $4,032.
“I’m glad to turn things around in Rapid City and get some money to move up in the standings,” Hansen said. “The run for Vegas has already started.”
Hansen is coming off his debut appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER last month in Las Vegas. He finished eighth in the final world standings with $180,295. He placed in four rounds, highlighted by winning Round 8 with an 86-point ride on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Tequila. He earned $84,038 at the WNFR and finished sixth in the average.
“It was definitely a lifelong dream to be at the WNFR, and then I won a round, which was also on Canada Night, and I couldn’t pick a better day to do that,” said Hansen, who was the Canadian National Champion in 2016. “I thought it was going to be a cool experience, and it was even better than I thought.”
Carter, meanwhile, took top honors in Rapid City with his 87.5-point ride on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Mobster Jan. 27. He also left town with a $3,807 check.
“It felt good to get that win and break the ice for the year,” said Carter, 25. “I had never seen that bull in person, but a bunch of my friends told me he was a really good bull. He sure bucked and was good enough to get a good score on.”
The Stone, Idaho, cowboy finished 29th in the world standings last year with $51,757. In 2016, Carter placed a career-best 19th in the world standings with $58,261. Carter is 64th in the Jan. 29 standings.
“I’m ready to rodeo and good to go and I’m up tonight in Fort Worth (Texas),” Carter said. “This year I just need to be more consistent and have fun. When you’re having fun is usually when you’re staying on and making money.”
