GLENDIVE – On Tuesday afternoon the DCC Men’s Basketball team celebrated as Brent Finn signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Texas A&M International University.
From Big Timber, MT, Finn came to Dawson to improve his basketball skills and prove himself at the college level. The 6’0 guard showed he belonged. In fact, he led the Buccaneers in scoring this past season, averaging 18.1 ppg while shooting 45.6% from the 3-point line and 90.2% from the free throw line in conference play. Those numbers ranked him 1st in the league in free-throw percentage and 2nd in 3-point percentage. He scored in double figures in 29 of the 32 games this season and finished the regular season by going 15-24 from the 3-point line in the final two games. His season high was 28 points on February 15th against Dakota College Bottineau. He was named 1st team All-Conference and All-Region XIII following the season. Finn is the latest in a long line of Montana players who have excelled at Dawson and used their experience in Glendive as a springboard to transfer on to 4-year programs.
“Finn loves basketball and has worked so hard to get where he is now,” said Dawson men’s coach Joe Peterson. “This is a great next step for him as he gets to play for a good coach at a good school and against high level competition. I have no doubt he will keep getting better because he has the right attitude and a great work ethic. I’m grateful that he chose to come to Dawson and he has done a lot for our program. It’s hard to see him go, but I’m excited to see him take on a new challenge.”
The Texas A&M International University Dustdevils are an NCAA D2 program located in Laredo, Texas and compete in the Heartland Conference which is one of the best leagues in the country. Their basketball program has won 5 championships in the past 9 years. Former assistant coach Joel Taylor was just named as their new Head Coach this week. Coach Taylor is a defensive minded coach that rewards hard work and discipline. Here is what he had to say, “We are extremely excited to welcome Brent into our program. His leadership, toughness, work ethic and overall love of the game are off the charts. We plan on Brent being a major contributor and having an immediate impact in our program. I am fired up to coach Brent and we are committed to surrounding him with other tough guys that will work hard and play an unselfish brand of basketball.”
Finn was equally as excited as his coach.
“I’m looking forward to being a Dustdevil because I love the way they do things in their program and am excited for the competitiveness and intensity at that level.”
