MONTEREY, Calif. – Competing for the second straight week, the Montana State University Billings women’s golf team opened up play at the Cal State University Monterey Bay Invitational on Monday at Poppy Hills Golf Club.

The Yellowjackets finished with a team score of 338 on the par-71, 5,804-yard course layout, and are in 20th place with one round of action remaining.

Senior Bailee Dexter, who was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week earlier on Monday, led the ‘Jackets with a 7-over-par 78. Dexter notched a pair of birdies on Day 1 of the event, shooting a 4-over-par 39 on the front and finishing with a 3-over-par 39 on the back. “I am proud of the way Bailee played today,” said MSUB assistant coach Jeff Allen. “She had a solid round and left a few shots out there that I know she’s eager to get back tomorrow.”

Shealyn Hafer finished with an 84 on Day 1 of the event, as she made par on eight holes Monday. Hafer is in a tie for 92nd place entering Tuesday’s final round.

Sammy Walter checked in with an 86 on Day 1, Sarah Schroefel finished with a 90, and Renae Heisler was one stroke behind with a 91.

Dallas Baptist University leads the competitive field of teams with a score of 7-over-par 291 on Day 1. DBU’s Hanna Harrison is the individual leader, as she shot a 3-under-par 68 to cruise to the top of the leaderboard Monday.

“This is a great tournament, and it would be hard to find a better field and better venue anywhere in the country right now,” Allen said. “Poppy Hills is one of the premier courses in Northern California. We are still trying to find our game because we simply haven’t been able to get rounds in back home. I look forward to the women taking lessons learned from today’s round and improving their scores tomorrow.”

THE BUZZ: Dexter was tabbed the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day.
