Jill Barta’s monster game leads Gonzaga to win at BYU

PROVO, Utah — Jill Barta put together a huge game to help lead the Gonzaga women’s basketball team to an 84-70 win at BYU on Saturday.

Barta, who won Montana’s 2014 Gatorade player of the year while starring at Fairfield High School, had a double-double by halftime against the Cougars and finished with 34 points and 15 rebounds. She was perfect from the floor, making all nine of her field goal attempts, including four 3-pointers. Barta added 12-of-14 performance at the free throw line.

Gonzaga built a 21-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, with Barta scoring 10 points in the frame. She had 19 points and 11 rebounds by halftime, and the Bulldogs led 38-26. Gonzaga led by as many as 21 points on their way to their 13th consecutive win.

As a team, Gonzaga made eight 3-pointers and shot 48.1 percent from the floor. The Zags out-rebounded BYU 45-29. Chandler Smith grabbed nine rebounds and Emma Stach added 16 points for Gonzaga, which snapped BYU’s 23-game home winning streak in West Coast Conference play.

Cassie Devashrayee led BYU with 24 points.

Gonzaga (19-4 overall, 12-0 conference) returns home from its three-game road trip on Thursday, playing host to Pacific at 7 p.m. (MT).
