MISSOULA — This past weekend, a load of high school wrestlers packed the Big Sky gym in Missoula to battle for their spots at the state tournament this weekend.

Tons of local kids from the Flathead Valley and Missoula Valley grabbed high-placing seeds, with some even at the top of the class.

Some of those No. 1 seeds are Tobias Martin from Big Sky in the 103-pound class, Cody Frost from Kalispell Glacier at 113 and Dougie Swanson from Big Sky at 152, among many others — not only in Class AA, but also in Class A.

“Just keep being aggressive, keep the pace going, because my conditioning is good out there, so I feel good when I’m in control,” said Missoula Big Sky’s Trevin Welzien.

“I’m just going take it one match at a time. I’m not going to really look at who is the seeding or anything like that,” Columbia Falls senior Colton McPhee said. “I’m just going to pretty much wrestle myself out there and hopefully get that state title. I think it’s all mental, whoever can take the most punishment and keep that drive going every day. Wake up, keep the right mindset every day.”

The all-class state wrestling tournaments start Friday at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark in Billings.
