Defending state champion Sidney routs competition at Eastern A wrestling divisional

MILES CITY — Five wrestlers won individual titles, leading defending State A wrestling champion Sidney to a dominant victory at the Eastern A divisional on Saturday. The Eagles racked up an astounding 349.5 points, scoring 116 more than runner-up Havre.

Kaiden Cline sandwiched Havre wins at 113 pounds, picking up a 12-5 decision over Braxton Scheeler of Miles City. Scheeler and the Cowboys finished third with 173 points.

Cline, the defending 103-pound champion, watched as teammates Aden Graves and Christian Dean won back-to-back titles at 132 and 138 pounds, respectively. Graves edged Miles City sophomore Damian Leidholt 4-2, while Dean earned a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Havre’s Lane Paulson.

Riley Waters added a Sidney title at 160 pounds, holding off Lewistown’s Duane Otto 8-7, and Jett Jones won the 182-pound weight class with a 5-0 decision over Cameron Younger of Laurel.

Havre’s Martin Wilkie kept his impressive season alive, winning the 145-pound championship. Wilkie is one of three wrestlers seeking a fourth-consecutive state championship next weekend at the state tournament in Billings, joining Colstrip’s Jackson Currier and Forsyth’s Michael Weber.

Mick Chagnon and Cameron Pleninger won championships at 103 and 120 pounds, respectively.

Glendive, which finished fourth in the team standings, earned titles from Nelson Crisafulli and Keegan Mires. Crisafulli defeated Sidney’s Trevor Dean at 170 pounds, a 6-4 decision, while Mires won the heavyweight division with a 3-1 decision over the Eagles’ Brodey Skogen.

Other champions included defending State A champion Cooper Birdwell of Lewistown, who won the 126-pound title, and two-time champion John Mears of Belgrade, who wrapped up the 152-pound championship. Mears seeks his third consecutive State A title next weekend.

Livingston’s Shane Gibson was the 205-pound medalist.

The top eight individuals in each weight class are guaranteed berths in the state tournament, which will be held at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark beginning next Friday.
