MISSOULA — One Seeley-Swan runner found a new gear at the KLH Memorial track and field meet in Missoula last Saturday.

Senior Hunter Shelmerdine finished the 400 meters with an official time of 49.82 seconds. The Blackhawk becomes the first in the state, in any class, to go sub-50 seconds this season.

The time broke both the Seeley-Swan school and KLH meet records.

Shelmerdine said the time is no fluke. He’s been aiming for it since his sophomore season.

“It’s been one of my main focuses for probably two years, to go sub-50, get the record. Just putting in all the time this week and last week, with it being cold out,” said Shelmerdine. “What makes it really special is I broke the school record, which was held by our athletic director, Shawn Holmes, who is running this meet. … So, just being able to do that is really cool.”
