POLSON — Deer Lodge’s boys and Charlo’s girls did just enough to claim team titles at the Dave Tripp Memorial track and field meet on Friday in Polson, as both held off Seeley-Swan to win the meet.
The Wardens didn’t have the number of winners that Seeley-Swan did, but they managed to outscore the Blackhawks 105-101.5. Deer Lodge’s 400-meter relay team beat Seeley-Swan by the narrowest of margins. Deer Lodge crossed in 45.59 seconds, while Seeley-Swan finished in 45.60.
The only other victory for Deer Lodge came in the high jump, where Dyllon McDermid and Greydon Nicholson tied with St. Regis sophomore Andrew Sanford for first place with a jump of 5 feet, 10 inches.
Deer Lodge’s Aiden Thompson placed third in the 800-meter run and third in the 1,600-meter run. McDermid placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and teammate Tanner Jolly finished fifth.
Seeley-Swan’s boys dominated on the track on Friday en route to the runner-up finish. Logan Robinson, currently Class C’s fastest man, won the 100 in 11.62 and teammate Dakota Wood finished third in 11.82. Robinson and Wood finished 1-2 in the 200 and Hunter Shelmerdine took tied for fourth for the Blackhawks.
Shelmerdine would claim an individual title on Friday, though, as he won the 400 in 51.62. Seeley-Swan’s holds Class C bests in both relays, and that translated to a win in the 1,600-meter relay for the Blackhawks, crossing in 3:33.57.
On the girls side, Charlo and Seeley-Swan are two of the Western C’s best and should continue to battle throughout the season. Charlo, though, edged Seeley-Swan 105.5-93 on Friday afternoon.
Charlo sophomore Carlee Fryberger had herself a day. Fryberger won the 100 in 13.49, won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.90, placed third in the 300-meter hurdles and finished third in triple jump.
Teammate Kaitlin Cox also had a strong performance to push the Vikings to the team title. Cox claimed victories in the long jump (16-05), triple jump (33-04) and finished second to Fryberger in the 100 hurdles. Allie Delaney added fourth place finishes in both hurdle races, and the Vikings won the 400-meter relay in 53.67.
Seeley-Swan had several girls contribute to its second-place finish. Lily Mercer finished second in the 100, just .01 behind Fryberger, and fourth in the 200. Freshman Hannah Ayers finished second in both the 400 and 1,600.
Klaire Kovatch claimed the discus for Seeley-Swan with a toss of 117-05, and Terra Bertsch tied with Thompson Falls sophomore Jody Detlaff for first in the high jump at 4-10. Bertsch also tied Deer Lodge’s Kamryn Scully for first in pole vault at 9-06.
