HELENA — Helena High has a new boys track and field coach.

Helena athletic director Tim McMahon recently announced that the Helena School District had approved Manny Garza as the Bengals’ replacement for Tony Arntson. Arntson, who coached the Helena football and track and field programs, resigned in February to accept an assistant coaching position at Carroll College.

Garza will be a familiar face to Helena High fans. His career with the school began in 1994 when he was hired as an athletic trainer. He later climbed the coaching ranks, serving as an assistant football coach for 11 years and assistant track coach the past 10.

Garza remains an assistant on the Bengals’ football staff, where longtime assistant Scott Evans replaced Arntson in March. Helena High opened its football season with a 16-6 win over Great Falls CMR on Aug. 24. The Bengals’ football team placed runner-up last fall, while the boys track program finished third two seasons ago.
