BUTTE — Just about every weather scenario you could think of happened this afternoon at Stodden Park as Butte High hosted Billings West on Friday. The Golden Bears battled the elements and held off Butte’s late rally for a 6-5 Eastern AA softball win.

The first couple innings were scattered with clouds and rain as West’s Deven Creech and Butte’s McCaul McCarthy battled through a pitchers’ duel. Both threw shutouts through three innings.

Then the sun came out and so did some offense in the top of the fourth. West’s Sydney Nelson knocked in the day’s first run with an RBI single. An inning later Nelson parked a three-run home run to extend the Golden Bears’ lead to 6-0 heading into the home half of the inning.

As hail started to come down, there seemed to be no life on the offensive side for either team … until the bottom of the seventh. Butte strung together five runs, which included a three-run home run from McCarthy.

The next batter popped out and the Bears held on for the 6-5 win on the road.
