BUTTE — It was a cold, snowy Saturday in the Mining City for the Butte Invitational Cross Country Carnival, but that didn't stop the runners from competing.
The girls 5K race kicked off varsity events. From the halfway point all the way to the finish line Helena High's Kylie Hartnett had a sizable lead that she never squandered, taking first place in a time of 17:38.
The boys 5k followed shortly after and at the midway point there was a solid pack of about eight runners all competing for the top spot. But as the finish line approached Billing Senior's Owen Smith was running alone as he crossed the line with a first-place time of 15:50.
