BILLINGS – Fairview’s basketball boys built a 10-point lead in the second quarter of Saturday night’s State C consolation game, but Scobey patiently answered with a giant mid-game run to win this year’s consolation trophy 51-43.
The Warriors tried to neutralize Scobey’s high scoring offense by spreading the floor in a half court. It worked for a while as Fairview built a 20-16 halftime lead.
But the Spartans reeled of a 17-0 run between the second and third quarters for a 27-20 lead. Fairview broke the drought on a free throw with 1:02 left in the third quarter, one of only four Warriors points in the period. Aiden Fishell answered with a buzzer-beating three to give Scobey a 30-24 lead after three.
Since trailing 18-8 in the 2nd quarter, Scobey answered with a 22-point swing to build it’s largest lead at 12 with 3:54 to play. The Warriors buried a barrage of late 3s, but the Spartans were able to put it away at the free throw line.
Fishell led Scobey with 16 points followed by Martin Farver with 10. Fairview’s Cody Asbeck was the game’s leading scorer with 17 on 6-9 shooting. Alex Schrive added 13.
