HIGHLIGHTS: Southwestern A district basketball tournament tipping off in Butte

BUTTE — Six teams from the Southwestern A made their way to the Maroon Activities Center in Butte this weekend for the district tournament.

The opening round tipped off Thursday.

BOYS

No. 4 Frenchtown 64, No. 5 Corvallis 58 (OT)

The Broncs came out hot on a 6-0 run to start the game behind great shooting from Cade and Zach Baker. Frenchtown would ride out their offensive momentum to take a 36-26 halftime lead. The Blue Devils came out ready in the second half, going on a 11-0 run in the first five minutes if the third quarter. Tanner Jessop created easy transition opportunities and open looks for his teammates. This one took overtime to decode a winner, but it’s Frenchtown escaping with a 64-58 win. The Broncs will play top-seeded Hamilton at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinal round.

No. 3 Dillon 68, No. 6 Stevensville 42

Logan Roth and company got hot early and the YellowJackets took a 18-17 lead after the first quarter. The Beavers responded and controlled the second quarter and ended it on a well-designed inbound pass that left Jace Fitzgerald wide open as the quarter expired. Dillon went into halftime up 34-25 and didn’t look back. The Beavers rolled on to win big by a final of 68-42. They will play Butte Central, with which they split a pair of games this season, Friday at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS

No. 4 Hamilton 37, No. 5 Frenchtown 27

Hamilton jumped out early behind forced turnovers turned easy baskets and lights-out shooting from Jordan Taggert and an array of Hamilton Broncs. They took their 26-6 halftime lead and never looked back. Frenchtown made things interesting in the end, but Hamilton takes this one 37-27. Hamilton will play No. 1-seed Corvallis in Friday’s semifinal round.

No. 3 Dillon 64, No. 6 Stevensville 33

Stevensville jumped out to a 13-12 lead after one, but then Dillon slowly crawled its way back and took a lead into half. From there, the Beavers never looked back. They went on to win easily by a final of 64-33. They will play No. 2-seed Butte Central Friday in the semifinals.
