Billings Senior's Owen Smith runs Class AA-best 15:27

BILLINGS -- Sometimes you're just feeling it and Tuesday was it for Owen Smith.

On a dry Amend Park course under sunny skies, the Billings Senior runner claimed Class AA's fastest cross country time of the season in 15:27:77 during the Billings City Meet.

"My goal all season has been to break 15:30," Smith told MTN Sports afterward. "I've been having a great season so I knew I had the ability to do it, and, yeah, I did it."

West's Caleb Hornung placed second in 15:56:69.

Senior and West tied in Tuesday's team standings with 30 points apiece. The Broncs received a trophy for winning the tiebreaker. Skyview was third with 69.

Senior's Elena Vandersloot set a lifetime personal record and outpaced the girls field in 18:02:85. She told MTN Sports her goal is to finished under the 18-minute mark at state. West's Alli Keith ran 18:52:67 to cross second.

West won the girls title with a low point total of 29, beating Skyview by 10. Senior was third with 61.

Montana's all-class state cross country meets are Oct. 26 at Eagle Falls Golf Course in Great Falls.
