LEWISTOWN — The Fort Benton girls may have come up one point shy of the team title at Saturday’s Central Montana Invite track meet in Lewistown as the host Eagles won, but the Longhorns outscored the other six teams at the meet handily. Lewistown was the only Class A school in attendance with the other eight being Class C schools.
Lewistown won the meet with 183 points. Fort Benton finished with 182, while the other seven Class C girls teams scored a combined 115 points.
Fort Benton, 2018’s State C runner-up, showed its prowess in the sprints early on. Leah Gannon and Allie Wallace finished 1-2 in the 200-meter dash. Gannon also won the 800 (2 minutes, 34.04 seconds) and Wallace won the 100-meter hurdles (17.16). McKenzie Clark finished second to Gannon in the 800. Fort Benton also won both relay races.
Fort Benton was just as dominant in the field events. Maci Molinaro won the javelin with a throw of 100 feet, 9.5 inches, and Clark finished third. Nixole Axtman won the high jump (4-10) and Clark won the pole vault (7-06). Ashlee Wang took second in the pole vault and Leah Fowles finished fourth.
Gannon added to her win total with a victory in the long jump, leaping 15-10.5. Axtman took third and Jenna Dunham finished sixth in the event. Axtman and Clark finished second and third in the triple jump, as well.
Lewistown’s boys would not have nearly the competition that its girls team had. The Eagles ran away with the team title, scoring 266 points. Second-place Fort Benton finished with 69.
Freshman Ashton Grover swept the 100 and 200 for Lewistown, winning in 11.98 and 25.11, respectively. Grover took second in the 400 to teammate Colin Gilpatrick. Lewistown had five of the six placers in the 400.
Lewistown placed multiple athletes in nearly every event. The only events the Eagles didn’t have multiple placers were the triple jump, high jump and javelin. Lewistown also swept both relay races.
