HELENA – Helena High had to start the search for a new wrestling head coach when John Burke stepped away from the program in March, but they didn’t have to look too far. Deciding on long time assistant Sam Bogard as the new man to lead the Bengals grappling program.

Bogard has been with Helena High for 10 years as a coach, and even longer before that wrestling for the school before graduating in 1988. And as a dyed in the wool Bengal, he understands perfectly where the program needs to be moving forward.

“It’s not really sunk in totally yet, so I’ve been writing a few things down here and there,” said Bogard. “There is a couple of things I want to do different. I want to do more stuff through the summer. Try and get more activities through the summer for the kids here. You got to have fun with these kids so that they want to just keep on coming back. But we are going to attack first. We want to always be attacking. Even if we’re already up eight, 10 points I want them to score again. I want these kids to get bonus points. Bonus points are what’s going to help you win tournaments. It’s what’s going to help you win duals.”
