BILLINGS – Good luck catching the Midland Roundtable’s latest Athlete of the Year nominee.

West High’s Maddie Brockel owns four years of varsity track and field experience and hasn’t wasted any time winning State AA titles. Brockel has six individual state championships and five more in the relays, including some record breakers.

Her 400-meter relay teams have twice set all-class Montana records and also own the school record time of 47:55 seconds.

Brockel’s favorite memory arrived early in her high school career.

“Definitely, sophomore year was fun,” she smiled. “Winning as a team, both boys and girls, were good memories. The bus ride home was really fun. Just celebrating as a team, everyone had a lot of excellent performances we were all stoked about.”

Brockel, who also showcases three varsity letters in soccer, has been hampered by injury much of this spring season. But she’s eager to close strong in her final state meet May 25-26.

Then, with a scholarship to Montana State, she’ll become a Bobcat and plans to pursue a career the medical field.

The Midland Roundtable will announce its male and female winners during a Wednesday night banquet next week at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center.
