HAVRE — The Class C boys and girls basketball teams earned a sweep over the Class A teams on the first day of the Hi-Line Invitational Tournament at Montana State University-Northern’s Armory Gymnasium on Thursday.
Class C boys 100, Class A 84
Caleb Bellach of Manhattan Christian and Brody Grebe of Melstone combined to score 46 points to help the Class C boys to a 100-84 win over Class A. Bellach (22 points) and Grebe (24), juniors who have been friends since elementary school, combined to make 19 of 41 field goal attempts, including seven 3-pointers. Bellach added 10 rebounds, while Grebe had nine.
Tanner Goligoski and Hunter Omlid of Hamilton paced the Class A boys with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Omlid added 10 rebounds.
The Class A all-stars built a 19-13 lead after the first quarter, but Class C won the remaining three quarters — scoring 28 points in the second, 27 in the third and 32 in the fourth — to pull away for the win.
Arlee’s Will Mesteth added 17 points for the Class C stars.
Class C girls 73, Class A 64
Alyssia Vanderburg of Arlee led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting to help the Class C girls to a 73-64 win over Class A. Vanderburg, a junior, added five rebounds and a steal in the win. Twin Bridge’s Kailee Oliverson added 16 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Class C all-stars.
The Class A stars, who were led by 15 points from Havre’s Kyndall Keller, built a five-point lead in the first quarter, but the Class C girls took a 21-19 lead after the opening period and ballooned the advantage to 40-30 at halftime and kept Class A at bay in the second half.
Lillian Gopher of Box Elder added 12 points and nine rebounds for Class C, which also got eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds from Froid-Lake’s Mackenzie Dethman.
Dillon’s Brynley Fitzgerald added 12 points for Class A.
